Aziz Ansari has been on a roll lately. The Parks and Recreation star is currently one of the highest paid comedians, and he also just launched his own show, Master of None. Accordingly, MR PORTER have featured Ansari in their new holiday issue of the Journal.
In addition to the photo spread — which highlights the entertainer looking rather dapper — they also sat down with him to speak on how looking good is expensive, hiring his parents as actors on Master of None, and more.
“I’m proud of the show obviously," Ansari proclaims when speaking about his Master of None show. "But I never expected it to be received with such fervour. It’s a hit! We’re done!”
In regards to casting his parents for the show, he explained, "I auditioned all these actors [to play my parents] and none of them felt real. It was important to get these characters right because immigrant parents can be portrayed awkwardly on TV and film. It’s like the Indian dad will come into the room and go like, ‘Oh, I slipped on curry!’ and that’s not real, that doesn’t happen. When I decided to cast my parents it was with that in mind and they played it very real.”
Even the wardrobe in the series is true to life. “I just wore my own clothes. But people have been asking me on Twitter where I got such and such a jacket from and I can’t tell them it’s Saint Laurent because my character is supposed to be a struggling actor! There’s no way he could afford a Saint Laurent shearling jacket.”
Due to his 5ft 6in frame, Ansari tends to gravitate towards Japanese brands as well as Dior and Saint Laurent. “Hey, you know what brands look really good on me? The most expensive ones!”
