calvin valentine kss keep summer safe
Calvin Valentine / Emily Berkley

Rising multi-instrumentalist Calvin Valentine describes his work as “ever evolving music for your soul,” which is a fair way of describing the initial moments of hearing his new single “KSS.” Its retro-leaning production and intimate bars arrive at the exact time that our end of summer ennui is reaching a fever pitch, and the track hints at great things to come from the LA-based musician’s upcoming full-length debut, Keep Summer Safe. Give “KSS” a listen below.

Speaking on the track, Calvin told Highsnobiety in an email that “I wrote ‘KSS’ on January 1, 2018. I had the flu and was feeling down and out physically. But my spirits were high ’cause I had seen my two favorites, John Mayer and Dave Chappelle, perform at The Forum for New Year’s… and also just ate some ganja food. I forced myself to go in the studio cause I always want to make something the first day of the new year. I ended up making the beat out of a song my girlfriend (Danielle) had made. Once the beat was together the hook just popped into my head. It took all my energy to record it but I kept those recordings for the final version cause you can feel the emotions in those takes. The song is my MJ Flu Game.”

Calvin Valentine’s Keep Summer Safe is out on September 14.
