Canada is officially the second country after Uruguay to legalize the possession and use of marijuana for recreational reasons. Medical marijuana has been legal in Canada since 2001.

As the BBC reports, Canada's first legal recreational weed was bought in Newfoundland at midnight on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. EDT), with hundreds of people lining up to exercise their constitutional right to get stoned.

Canadian provinces and municipalities have been given the task of determining where cannabis can be bought and consumed, which has created varying levels of legislative restriction across the country.

Senators voted 52-29 on a federal government bill back in June to pave the way for the legalization of recreational cannabis. Legalization was one of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s big campaign promises when he came to power as leader of the governing Liberal Party in 2015.

According to the BBC, the Canadian government predicts it will raise around Ca$400 million (approximately $309 million) a year in tax revenues now that cannabis has been legalized.

Uruguay fully legalized the drug back in 2013 under then-President José Mujica.
