After teasing their collaboration back in September 2017, Virgil Abloh’s OFF-WHITE and premium luggage label RIMOWA’s see-through suitcase will drop at the OFF-WHITE menswear show in Paris next week. The controversial case style, however, is not exclusive to this much-hyped collaboration. This option from CRASH BAGGAGE allows you to rock the look early, while also parting with less of your hard-earned dollar.
Available in 65L and cabin-friendly 40L sizes, CRASH BAGGAGE’s 4-wheel bag is a window into your entire vacation wardrobe. Boasting a totally see-through body, it features black accents on the legs, zipper and handle, with the brand’s yellow logo stamped front and center.
The suitcase, which stays true to Crash Baggage’s signature dented designs for a pre-worn aesthetic, retails at $406 and $352 respectively. With the OFF-WHITE x RIMOWA case reported to cost approximately $995, that’s a fraction of the price, and what’s more, it has been available since 2015 (as you’ll see in the hilariously shady “TRANSPARENT SINCE 2015” IG caption below).
Describing his upcoming collaboration piece, titled “More Personal Belongings”, Abloh explained the transparent design of his suitcase as “not just putting your initials on [your suitcase], but allowing another layer to come in play.” Speaking to The Business of Fashion, he also said that “There’s an emotional component to owning [the suitcase] and you become a performance art piece just using the thing. It’s like putting your items on display and rethinking the premise of a product.”
OFF-WHITE’s collaboration with RIMOWA, who are celebrating 12 decades in the luggage game this year, comes just shortly after the suitcase brand’s hyped collaboration with Supreme, as well as a collab with Anti Social Social Club earlier this year and upcoming pieces with Parisian brand NASASEASONS.
Of course, there are pros and cons to the trend. Your investment in see-through luggage is, for one, an undeniably effective way of turning heads when rolling through airport security this summer. Not only this, it’s also the perfect way to show off the best in swimwear, shades and sandals that those who have been paying attention to our recent round-ups will already have in their vacation arsenal by now.
On the other hand, the case’s flex appeal drops dramatically to anyone not gifted in the packing department. Fine for your outbound flight, when everything is presumably folded to perfection, but try making this case look good when all your dirty laundry is on display.
That said, if you think you have what it takes to make this luggage trend work, this Luisaviaroma-stocked alternative to the hyped collaboration by OFF-WHITE and RIMOWA is a worthy contender to get ahead of the game. If nothing else, it’ll ease the likely reality of having to cop Abloh’s version on the resell market for an even higher price point after it drops on June 25.
