Rapper cupcakKe has spoken out for the first time since she was hospitalized after tweeting she was "about to commit suicide."
BBC Newsbeat reported that cupcakKe, whose real name is Elizabeth Harris, was taken to hospital by Chicago Police on Monday after the tweet, which she also reposted on Instagram with the caption, “thank you for everything y’all have done for me I really appreciate it.”
Police confirmed the 21-year-old artist was safe and said that she was hospitalized for "mental evaluation" rather than injuries. cupcakKe today tweeted, "I've been fighting with depression for the longest... sorry that I did it public last night but I'm ok. I went to the hospital and I'm finally getting the help that I need to get through, be happy, & deliver great music. thanks for all the prayers but please don't worry bout me."
The rapper has opened up about her struggles with depression before. “I try to be as positive as possible but I just want to say I'm at a very low & depressed point in my life,” she tweeted in August. “I didn't realize it until I went 4 days without eatting.”
More than 10,000 people, including fans and fellow artists, responded to Monday's tweet, concerned about her welfare and offering support.
cupcakke was due to tour the UK this week but the dates have been pushed back to March.
