“What’s the Point?” That’s both the title and the main question that George Condo explores in his new exhibition at the Sprüth Magers gallery in Los Angeles.
“What’s the point of consistency in art?” Condo asks, “Every time I put a brushstroke down on a canvas I ask myself, ‘What’s the point?'”
What is the point of consistency in art? What is the point of every mark he makes on a canvas? What is the point of a particular color choice? These are the questions that should be at the heart of every artist’s work, Condo argues in this exhibition, who states that all of his actions are intentional; that everything serves a purpose.
The exhibition features a number of oil works by Condo, mostly painted on linen, and draws inspiration from 17th century portraiture of the beggars and thieves found in classic Dutch and Italian paintings. Explore a selection of the work above.
“What’s the Point?” is open now and runs until June 1.
