Maison Margiela is never too far from a divisive design. The iconic Tabi Boot has to be one of the most controversial designs in luxury footwear, but even more recent designs like the brand’s takes on classic Reebok kicks with cutout sandal uppers and split-toe builds caused a stir when they hit shelves. Nothing can quite compare to the brand’s new Thigh-High Boots, though. Tabis look conservative next to these boots.

Kanye definitely paved the way for big, bulky boots earlier this year with his viral Red Wing boots, but nothing could have prepared the world for Margiela's entry. Cut from leather, the boots extend all the way up to the mid-thigh — a whopping 30.4 inches. While the base might be leather, the boots are hand-painted in bold red paint for an unmissable rubberized finish.

It’s certainly an intriguing arrival just in time for summer. But, the more we think about it, the more we realize that it's actually never the right time to wear the Margiela Thigh-High Boots and that’s exactly what makes them so… well, so Margiela.

The label has outdone itself on the tongue-in-cheek scale. These monumentally awkward boots go against everything the utilitarian muck boot stands for. They brim with irreverence, sticking two massive, rubberized, red fingers up to the preconceived notions of what a luxury label should release in time for spring/summer.
