Though it's chiefly known as a high-end sneaker line, New Balance Made in USA sure is making a lot of clothes. In fact, for every pair of instant-classic dad shoes produced using New Balance’s supplest suede, the imprint also offers at least one piece of apparel, from neutral-hued sweatsuits of heavyweight French terry cloth to a midi-length pleated skirt.

With Aimé Leon Dore founder Teddy Santis as creative director, the Made in USA line has quietly ramped up its clothing production in the past few years, leading to its first-ever collaboration dedicated exclusively to its premium garbs — no shoes in sight.

Appropriately, the collab-crazed Japanese retail giant BEAMS is NB MiUSA’s first apparel-only partner.

Even without any special-edition sneakers, the collaboration is still themed around shoes, with BEAMS and New Balance Made taking inspiration from two classic sneaker silhouettes, the New Balance 990 and 1300.

Both shoes’ signature colorways of neutral grey and steel blue are reinterpreted into a range of relaxed sweats dropping on January 9, with BEAMS slightly widening the fits and dropping the shoulders to its oversized likings.

Together, they create a loose sweatsuit of mismatched colors, where a blue-grey sweatshirt has a contrasting dark grey kangaroo pocket, a zip-up hoodie is constructed using various shades of heavyweight grey cotton panels, and cuffed sweatpants are a dark shade of charcoal grey. Nothing really matches, which is part of the fun.

Equally baggy is the collection’s centerpiece T-shirt, a slouchy white top with a timeline of grey-colored New Balance 990s printed on its back. The telling detail isn’t the print, however, but the shirt’s heavy 195-gram cotton jersey.

The defining characteristic of New Balance Made in USA’s excellent sneakers is the materials. Instead of toying with the shapes of New Balance’s shoes, it decks them out in a considered medley of tasteful colors and elevated makes. Same goes for the clothing. These are regular New Balance clothes — that is, sweatsuits and tees — but made quite a bit nicer. And, in this case, quite a bit looser.
