Nike is taking PUMA to court over allegations that the German sportswear company has infringed on the Swoosh’s patents. According to Forbes, on May 3, 2018, Nike filed a patent infringement complaint against PUMA North America in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Nike is claiming that PUMA has “forgone independent innovation” and is using Nike’s technologies without permission. Specifically, Nike alleges that PUMA is using its Flyknit, Air, and cleat assembly technologies. Forbes reports that Nike has demanded PUMA cease such use, a demand with which the German company has apparently refused to comply.

The Swoosh assumedly believes that PUMA’s IGNITE Proknit infringes on Nike’s Flyknit technology, while PUMA’s Jamming is using Air Sole technology without permission.

Nowadays, shoe companies put a lot of efforts into developing new technologies that set them apart from their competition, which is why it makes sense that the likes of Nike is protecting its proprietary technologies at all costs.
