Shay Lia

Shay Lia makes it all seem so easy. Her voice, effortless; in every visual depiction, she looks like someone you’d want to smoke a joint and watch movies with. After singles like “Blue,” co-produced by BADBADNOTGOOD and KAYTRANADA, and a handful of memorable appearances’s on KAYTRANADA’s tracks, the Montréal via France and Djibouti singer-songwriter has established herself as a powerful presence that doesn’t need gimmicks to impress.

Case in point, her newest track “The Cycle,” in which she dismisses a trifling lover in a way that’s part eye-roll, part intimate, confessional voicemail. Over warped R&B smoothness courtesy of Soulection affiliate Sango, Shay sings lines like, “How in the hell does it feel knowing / You ain’t shit now and you weren’t beforehand?” and we can’t get enough.

“’The Cycle’ is not the type of song that inspired me with a full storyline for the video but, a simple and direct energy that I managed to convey in the video with how I played with the camera,” Shay told Highsnobiety over email.

“I don’t have a lot of music videos in which I show this part of me and I thought it was the best track for that. I was staying in this beautiful house in L.A to finalize my first EP and I immediately knew it would be the perfect location. I was very involved artistically in the process of this video as I co-directed it, co-edited it and created the look myself.” Check out our exclusive premiere of the official video for Shay Lia’s “The Cycle” below.
