Ahead of looming September's final fashion month of the year, SSENSE and us wanted to quickly revisit what has been one of 2025's defining style trends: Mullet-wear. And while you may not know off the bat what that refers to, you sure as hell have seen it in action, even if you are but a most casual follower of runway shows.

When the shorts were short, the coats these were paired with became even longer. A new paradigm of proportions, this rule of thumb was present on Men's and Women's catwalks this year, at everyone from Auralee to Dries Van Noten to Prada, next to other key motifs like all those kooky accessories and open toe shoes.

By now, the dress code's even become something of a pop cultural gag, with recent paparazzi pics from Lena Dunham's Good Sex filmset seeing headliner Natalie Portman effortlessly sport the "Menswear TikToker" uniform. But so, if you, too, wanna do this new brand of high-low getup, better do it as well as the Oscar winning actor ...

When Shorts Are Cut Shorter, Coats Grow Longer:

An outfit this playful may benefit from a more serious, elegant take on color. How about an all-out navy moment, huh?

This being a spring-summer trend after all, there's of course nothing wrong with playing with some bright and bold contrasts either.

If you wanna really lean into the superlatives of the two, why not go for the trenchiest of trench coats, and the boxeriest of boxers you can find?

This combo's equally reluctant to keep it simple, with a crinkly-textured macintosh over faded gray Daisy Dukes.

Elsewhere, sacai's characteristically subversive hand at outerwear allows for a left-of-center approach to the mullet fit, with some bare-bones bottoms letting the cool coat really shine.
