Some are born great, others have greatness thrust upon them, and some work their whole lives to transform into an utter badass. Princess Nokia, a born-and-bred NYC MC, is a textbook case of the latter. And as new documentary from The Fader shows, it is a role that she has assumed flawlessly.

Still based in The Bronx, Princess Nokia has risen to prominence this year with the release of “Tomboy,” a thunderous single that you can see her perform live in the documentary’s opening scene. And like many in the music scene today, she has eschewed record labels in favor of self-managing her career; a rewarding but hard path.
