As part of the Desert X art festival, where 16 artworks have been installed across the Coachella Valley, American artist Doug Aitken has built a small cabin that’s covered top-to-bottom in mirrors outside Palm springs. Modeled after a ranch-style suburban American house, the sculpture’s exterior is composed entirely of mirrored surfaces which reflect the surroundings and give the structure a camouflage effect.

Aitken reconfigured the design by removing doors and windows so the structure doesn’t feel private or secured. Inside, the reflective surfaces create a kaleidoscopic effect that evokes a sensation of confusion rather than comfort.

Desert X runs until April 30, however, Aitken’s Mirage will remain in place until October 31.
