When did you first decide to get into music?
I’ve always been into music ever since I was a little girl, but I got into music professionally when I was about 14/15 years old.
You grew up in Brooklyn — which is home to a plethora of amazing artists. What was it like growing up there and how did it influence your sound?
Growing up there I can say had a huge influence on my sound and sometimes my mannerisms. Being signed to Roc Nation is a Brooklynite dream. As an artist from Brooklyn, being signed to a huge Brooklyn Self Made Mogul, it’s a huge deal. They’ve always known about me, but were waiting for the right time, when they thought I was ready. I got out of my deal with Atlantic and was able to be where I should’ve been. Things happen for a reason though and it’s all about right timing.
Who’s the person you’ve instantly just connected with in the studio?
Someone I’ve instantly connected with would probably be The Dream. He broke me out of my shy shell the first session. He’s also a musical genius, so I definitely didn’t want to mess up the opportunity by not being completely open.
Out of all the rappers you’ve worked with, who’s the funniest? Schoolboy is funny on Snapchat…
Schoolboy is definitely pretty funny, especially while on set for the video, he cracks all the jokes and makes everyone feel comfortable.
Overtime (W Schoolboy & Miguel) is a jam — how did that song come about?
Well, someone on my management team knew someone in his camp and they were looking for a new female artist to put on the song, they heard me and brought me into the studio to work on it with him. It was pretty surreal lol, I was kinda like.. Me? Schoolboy Q knows me and wants me to be on his song for real? LOL.
What’s the weirdest thing people won’t know about you?
I secretly do Shakira impersonations, LMAO.
The color purple is close to your heart. Any reason behind that?
There’s no deep reason, it’s just the only color my mom let me dye my hair and it kinda just became apart of me.
And you’ve got your own make-up coming out. What are your plans with that and the rest of the year?
I did a collab with MAC cosmetics, it’s a purple iridescent powder. I also just did a campaign and exclusive song for Forever 21 for their festival collection. I’m currently working on my debut album, and there’s many more surprises to come.
