One of the summer’s protracted transfer sagas, it now appears PSG is set to land Barcelona forward Neymar for a record-breaking fee of around $260 million.
In a statement published on its official website, Barca confirmed the Paris club had agreed to pay the release clause in Neymar’s contract worth €222 million (around $262,725,900, according to Google). And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Factoring in the Brazilian’s wages (rumored to come in at $240 million over six years), signing on fee, agent fee and loyalty bonus, the net transfer cost could work out at well over $600 million.
Still, the fee is no biggie to a club like PSG, which is owned by the cash-rich Oryx Qatar Sports Investments. It’s been heavily speculated that the group wants to market Neymar as the poster boy for the controversial Qatari World Cup, which takes place in 2022. On Neymar’s behalf, pundits have suggested it’s not just the cash, but the chance to step out of Lionel Messi’s shadow, which has influenced his decision to leave Barcelona.
“The player Neymar Jr, accompanied by his father and agent, has informed FC Barcelona this morning of his decision to leave the Club in a meeting held at the Club’s offices,” the club wrote in a statement.
“Faced with this position, the Club has informed them they refer to the buy-out clause in his existing contract which as of 1 July totals 222 million euros which will have to be deposited in its entirety.”
How Barca attempts to fill the Neymar-shaped hole remains to be seen. A slew of superstar names, including Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and Atletico Madrid’s Antonie Griezmann, are already being linked with the club.
