Google’s controversial new AI-powered camera “Clips” has been met with criticism from none other than Tesla founder Elon Musk.
Musk, a staunch critic of artificial intelligence, took to Twitter to voice his opinion on Clips, which is powered by Google’s AI
Replying to a video of Clips posted by The Verge, Musk tweeted: ”This doesn’t even *seem* innocent.” It seems the Space X founder believes Clips to be a blatant disregard for privacy and did not shy away from making that public.
Clips works by using AI to instantly recognize faces that would be of interest to its owner (such as family, friends and pets). It then takes candid photos remotely and at its own discretion. The AI learns over time to make sure the camera picks the best moments and subjects to photograph.
Google Glass failed in part due to the anti-social aspect of photographing people without their consent and knowledge, but whether Clips fares differently remains to be seen.
In other news, Elon Musk has offered to rebuild Puerto Rico’s electrical grid after hurricane Maria.
