After Swedish retailer H&M was called out for being racist following a controversial online ad, many social media users and celebrities flocked to the internet to air their views regarding the product. The Weeknd went so far as to cut ties with the brand, while other stars had their say.

In quick succession, many alternative designs and drawings began to surface. Removing the hoodie’s original “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” text, the new images replaced the slogan with re-affirming prints such as “Coolest King in the World.”

Famous names to comment were Diddy, LeBron James, and model Adonis Bosso, each chiming in with their own statements of disappointment. Rapper Plies also had his say.

Taking a more critical approach, many users across Instagram and Twitter highlighted the ridiculousness of the campaign and the need for better production teams. Similar mishaps such as Dove’s campaign and Kendall Jenner’s Pepsi ad were cited as comparisons. In addition, one user pointed out that while boycotting H&M is one step, the conglomerate also owns several other high street stores including COS, Weekday and ARKET, claiming it should be a case of boycotting them all.

 

Others, meanwhile, tried to turn the negative circumstance into a funny one.
