Fashion is a crowded space. Between the spectacle created by the seemingly endless series of fashion weeks across the globe and the viral marketing schemes deployed only for amusement (I still can’t stop seeing those big red boots), so much product is vying for attention.

Even with all of the noise generated by the ever-expanding world of fashion, one simple fact remains: we’re all searching for quality garments that fit our style needs. With help from Madewell, we tapped Highsnobiety’s own Jake Silbert, Fashion News Editor, and Sebastian Jean, Fashion Director, to style some classic looks and dish the details on their personal style identities.

“I think clothing should be easy and effortless,” notes Jake. “Timeless clothes universally translate to different styles, aesthetics, and tastes. The perfect wardrobe allows you to get ready for the day without worrying whether or not the garments complement each other.”

Dressing well doesn’t have to be difficult. With fads pulling you in countless directions, overcomplicating the fit isn’t uncommon—unfortunately, that fourth angle you're looking at in the mirror isn’t going to change much. “A lot of people want to look good, but not everyone knows necessarily how to do it or where to go,” says Sebastian, adding, “it's great to have a brand like Madewell offering a selection of pieces that are well-designed and understated, but also give off an elevated feel.”

In Madewell's case, the focus is on thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship, something both Jake and Sebastian appreciate. The staple brand operates in contradiction to quickly changing trends in fashion, choosing to produce essential pieces that embody that iconic vintage 90s aesthetic. Take Madewell denim, for example. Unlike other options, the brand’s diverse line of denim always includes classic cuts matched with authentic quality, reflected in its recently launched Spring collection.

For Sebastian, it’s all about doing more with less. As a stylist, he understands that people are hyper-aware of what he’s wearing and endorsing on a daily basis. “I’m not so much trying to do the super high fashion stuff right now, but just trying to find good pieces that are made well and feel good.” By finding the beauty in simplicity, Sebastian’s looks are made for the observant eye, denouncing trends and embracing versatility.

The desire for style and utility shines through in Sebastian's fits. Sticking to the pared-down aesthetic, Seb rocked Madewell’s Brushed Terry Hoodie in Pale Mauve, matching it with a signature pair of 1991 Straight-Leg Jeans in Mainshore Wash. These two pieces make the perfect match, maintaining the balance of throwback and modern for a one-of-a-kind style for our beloved Fashion Director.

Jake shares a lot of the same feelings as his stylist colleague. As someone who stays updated with fashion’s latest happenings, it’s no surprise that he can distinguish quality from the hype. Being based in NYC, the perfect pieces for Jake have utility across all four seasons. “I want to wear basically the same thing all year— easy sweaters, staple shirts, and ‘90s-style denim jeans I can cuff on my sneakers,” he shares. “Modular clothes that flow and complement each other perfectly.”

Opting for more neutral tones and loose-fitting pieces in his wardrobe, Jake went with the staple Cotton-Linen Sweater Polo to complement his Madewell Pleated Cotton-Linen Chinos. Two distinct elements that, when matched together, give off the trademark “casual but considered” vibe Madewell is known for.

Despite all that’s involved in fashion discourse today, there’s no shame in keeping it lowkey—in fact, lowkey may even make for a better fit. Jake notes, “Madewell offers easy shapes, effortless silhouettes, and clothing that outlasts trends and fashion cycles.” Sebastian maintains that one of the best things someone can do when it comes to personal style is “just a little less.” Luckily, Madewell is here to ensure your style gives off that classic, understated feel while upholding that high quality we’re always trying to capture.
