Editor’s Notes: Menswear designer John Elliott is no stranger to Nike collaborations. In May, we got our best look at his next collab thanks to none other than LeBron James.
The NBA star wore the black and white version of the sneakers, which the designer has dubbed “Icon,” on his customary pre-game catwalk to the locker room. Elliott’s Instagram account documented the whole thing, posting two pictures of the sneakers themselves, as well as snaps of James rocking the silhouette on court and post-game.
Now, the Swoosh has officially unveiled the collaborative silhouette, as Elliott describes the shoe as a “breakthrough,” adding that the collaboration was “a gift as a creative, and one you can only exercise through the Nike lens.”
James had been a fan of Elliott’s work since 2014, and according to Elliot, this collab which also includes a series of transitional apparel like a sleek zip-up bomber, hoodie, pants and more in minimalist/tailored fits, cater to LeBron’s workflow from the Nike campus to home in L.A., to meetings in New York and back again.
In addition, the distinct silhouette expressed an essential philosophy for the collection as a whole, as the addition was simple, but effective — a sock.
“The idea for the sock — that was LeBron’s idea,” explains Elliott. “It’s a great story to tell, because it really hammers home my whole ethos as a designer, which is all about creating a layered look.”
Adding, “When LeBron came up with the sock, it really completed the collection,” says Elliott. “In the end, I really learned from him.”
Previously, notorious leaker account @py_news posted official imagery of sneaker on their Instagram, stating the suggested retail price will be $250.
The new silhouette borrows its midsole from the LeBron 8, which is reportedly Elliott’s favorite of the LeBron signature sneakers thus far. In one of the Instagram posts, John Elliott wrote, “Excited to announce our collection for the worlds greatest athlete,” prompting speculation that the Icon is part of a larger collection.
