Editor’s Notes: Bodega is slated to release the New Balance 850 in just a matter of days, following Aimé Leon Dore’s exclusive launch in June. To commemorate the drop, the retailer debuts an editorial highlighting the ’90s New Balance silhouette.
The New Balance 850 debuted back in 1996 as the brand was attempting to appeal to a new generation. New Balance in turn looked to a young designer by the name of Stephanie Howard to take the lead on the 850. At the time, she was the youngest designer at the company.
As the goal was to create something fresh, New Balance decided to remove the “N” logo generally featured on the side of its shoes for the first time ever. The sneaker was then given a mesh and leather upper to accentuate the modern, wavy aesthetic of the silhouette. Furthermore, a carbon rubber outsole provided the shoe — designated as unisex — with added durability.
Bodega will be releasing the New Balance 850 as the exclusive North American retailer this Saturday, August 17. Priced at $100, the sneaker will be available at Bodega Boston and Los Angeles, as well as online. For more on the history of the 850, visit Bodega’s website.
