Dapper Dan is one of the most interesting figures in menswear. Tracing the designer’s roots will reveal a journey more organic and authentic than most could dream of. Interesting, then, that it all began with replicas.

Dubbed the “King of Knock-Offs,” Dapper Dan is a Harlem institution that made his name shaping the aesthetic of hip-hop and rap culture in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Aside from his subcultural achievements, he’s one of the best-dressed men (maybe ever) with a unique style that’s all about maximalism.

Having been tapped to bring his mix-and-match style to the likes of Gucci and GAP in the last few years, Dapper Dan’s journey from knock-off to authentic cultural shaper is complete. The cherry on top? The latest PUMA x Dapper Dan collaboration.

Comprising some of PUMA’s classic silhouettes — the Clyde Sneakers and a signature tracksuit — PUMA x Dapper Dan is defined by a geometric pattern in burgundy, dark green, and off-white. This royal motif is accompanied by leather co-branding to the reverse of the velvet-trimmed track jacket and thigh of the track pants. As for the Clyde Sneakers, crystal-lined DDP text to the rogue works in tandem with tassel-tipped laces to add that classic Dapper Dan punch.

The PUMA x Dapper Dan collection is short but sweet. There’s no need for an extensive, exhausting selection when three pieces can do the job. They embody the kind of maximalist style that made Dapper Dan an icon while also nodding to the utilitarian sportswear heritage of PUMA.
