To say that Volkswagen had a tumultuous year would we an understatement. The company came under fire for lying on emissions tests, sparking outrage over its diesel vehicles. At CES 2016, Volkswagen attempted to clear the air, so to speak, with the unveiling of a new electric Microbus concept dubbed the BUDD-E.

Inspired by the Volkswagen bus of years past, the prototype vehicle claims to be the first to operate on an all-new Modular Electric Platform, allowing it to achieve a range of 373 miles on a single charge, though these estimates were based on European tests.

The platform hopes to pave the way for automotive technology of the future, not only in drivetrain architecture but in the way it's designed, too. An innovative digital interface controlled by hand gestures and voice commands will keep driver retention on the road, while fostering seamless communication.

For a more traditional take on the vehicle, take a look at ICON's remastered '67 bus.
