Converse is as authentically American as you can get. Now, one of the latest packs to drop from the iconic all-American sneaker label is hitting Europe. The Converse MA-1 Zip Suede Pack, available in two blocked colorways of black or white, is the latest from the Boston brand's Military Zip Collection, which reworks the classic silhouette with iconic fabrics and design motifs inspired by the US Air Force and the military garments that have become streetwear staples.
The MA-1 bomber jacket is one of those. First introduced in 1950 for pilots in Korea, the jacket served as the starting point for the Military Zip Collection. The Converse MA-1 Zip Suede Pack is the latest drop in the collection, following July’s Converse MA-1 Zip Nylon Pack.
In Brooklyn's historic Navy Yard, where aircraft carriers were docked and repaired, and from where early US fighter jets and their pilots would prepare for their missions, pilots and ground staff would no doubt recognise the materials used across the Converse MA-1 Zip Suede Pack. The snug elasticated collars for the ankle are homage to the bomber jacket's signature tapered cuffs, while the chunky zip on the tongue is a direct reference to its secure fastenings and signature arm pocket. For a winter-ready look and feel, the upper and patch have been crafted from a premium treated suede that weathers perfectly with a rich look and color.
Bomber jackets soon found their way onto the streets of Europe, with their tapered fit and functional design catching on quickly due to the popularity of army surplus gear everywhere from Berlin all the way back to Boston. The popularity is set to continue with the new Converse MA-1 Zip Suede Pack, for which Foot Locker has partnered with Converse to bring the new MA-1 Zip Suede Pack to Europe.
