COMME des GARÇONS’ alumnus Junya Watanabe is one of the menswear world’s most esoteric characters, frequently unveiling dramatic, bizarre collections of avant-garde tailoring.

For FW16, Watanabe has fused his unique aesthetic with modern tech, with this solar-powered trench coat that can charge a smartphone. The jacket sports four solar panels on the back and two on the front, and features a hidden interior power pack that offers on-the-go charging capabilities.

While we’re told that you’d need to spend a considerable time out in the sun to fully charge a power-thirsty iPhone, it’s pretty interesting to see a high-fashion label – especially one as niche as Junya Watanabe – throw itself so readily into the emerging wearable tech sector.

The jacket is scheduled to hit retailers from July 2016, priced at €2,000.
