About Loewe

Loewe is one of the oldest luxury brands in the world — the Spanish fashion house was founded in 1846 in Madrid. Loewe brand goes back to when they specialized in leather purses and handbags for the Spanish royalty. Since 1996, Loewe has been under the luxury goods conglomerate LVMH.

The Spanish clothing brand underwent a radical transformation under the forward-thinking British designer Jonathan Anderson who joined in 2013 with a new vision for Loewe. Fast forward to the present, the label is often seen on the backs of rap royalty and other A-listers, including A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, Kylie Jenner, and Zendaya.

As Loewe is a Spanish brand, and goods in the country of origin are often more affordable due to lower overall costs, it tends to be cheaper in Spain. The Loewe brand was established in 1846 in Madrid, Spain, initially as a leather goods workshop.

Thirty years later, German leather craftsman Enrique Loewe Roessberg joined forces with the workshop, and the brand named Loewe was born.

Branching out from designer leather goods – Loewe launched its first ready-to-wear fashion collection in 1965.

1970 - 1980

In 1970, Loewe introduced its most iconic handbags, including the Loewe Flamenco bag. Then, in 1975, the most iconic arm candy, the Loewe Amazona bag, was released.

The brand also expanded into Loewe perfumes range and fashion and appointed Giorgio Armani as one of the designers.

The Loewe anagram logo was created by Spanish painter Vicente Vela.

Loewe opened its first US store in New York in 1983; however, it closed in 1993.

1996 - 1998

Loewe was acquired by the LVMH group in 1996.

Narciso Rodriguez became the new creative director of Loewe in 1997.

Loewe presented its first collection in Paris at LVMH HQ in 1998.

2000 - 2007

José Enrique Oña Selfa took over as the new creative director of Loewe from 2000 – 2007.

In 2008, the label appointed British designer Stuart Vevers (having worked at Calvin Klein, Givenchy, and Louis Vuitton alongside Marc Jacobs), and with him, the label entered the wider fashion consciousness as a force to be reckoned with.

Under Stuart Vevers, Loewe scaled back on fashion with more focus on handbags and gifting, bringing back the iconic Loewe Flamenco bag from the archives.

The Loewe brand launched its first standalone London store in Mayfair.

Jonathan Anderson, known for his conceptual unisex collections and his London-based label J.W. Anderson – joined in 2013 and took a year to reimagine the brand’s aesthetic. The label has seen many changes over the years, but none compare to Anderson’s reinvention. The goal was to figure out how to turn this rather conservative beacon into a modern, cultural brand – tapping into the millennial zeitgeist – while still paying homage to its heritage.

In 2014 Anderson debuted his first’ Loewe men’s collection to widespread acclaim. Loewe’s new identity included a fresh logo design, teaming up with legendary photographer Steven Meisel for an iconic ad campaign, and a new social media strategy.

The recognizable Loewe Puzzle bag was launched in 2015. This newer design has played an enormous part in Loewe’s success, becoming an instant “It” bag worn by the likes of Beyoncé and model Elsa Hosk.

For Loewe Spring/Summer 2016, Anderson threw us a curveball, tapping into pop-culture references with manga-print suits and Disney princesses.

The same year, Loewe opened its first flagship store in Madrid, Spain, Casa Loewe Madrid.

In 2017 Anderson unveiled what would be the first in a line of several collaborations with the enigmatic ’70s boutique Paula’s Ibiza – revisiting his childhood years spent on the White Isle.

He would return with the Disney theme in Spring/Summer 2019 with his Dumbo capsule collection to coincide with Tim Burton’s live-action version of the classic movie.

A$AP Rocky was cast for the Loewe Spring/Summer 2019 campaign.

The same year the new Casa Loewe concept store opened its doors in London’s New Bond Street, curated by Anderson, fusing art and interior design.

Another example of cross-genre collaboration is Loewe Spring/Summer 2020 collection, featuring the Emmy Award-winning actress Jodie Comer from the hit TV series Killing Eve.

In 2020, Loewe X Studio Ghibli collaborated on a drop dedicated to the beloved 1988 animation, My Neighbor Totoro.

Loewe’s signature bag, Loewe Amazona, makes a comeback in the brand’s one of most iconic bags, Fall/Winter 2021.

Loewe teamed up once again with Studio Ghibli Inc on a LOEWE X Spirited Away capsule inspired by the animation, Spirited Away, which later sold for thousands at the resale market.

Anderson blows things out of proportion for Loewe’s Fall/Winter 2022 with a collection of playfully warped shirts and jeans.

Loewe partners with Swiss footwear brand On — Loewe X On sneakers and technical running gear — a drop of six pieces in total, including On Cloudrock hiking boots and On Cloudventure running shoes.

After his own JW Anderson’s SS 2023, Loewe’s creative director Anderson revealed his vision for Loewe SS23 during Paris Fashion Week, featuring grass-covered coats.

Loewe’s SS23 drop was inspired by IRL Minecraft and metaverse fashion, featuring items such as Loewe pixel hoodie and other pixelated 3-D clothing.

Once again, teaming up with On later in the year, the brands released a Loewe X On Cloudventure trail runner in a cheery yellow, black, and white colorway.
