Hip hop legends Run-D.M.C have filed an eye-watering $50 million lawsuit accusing retailers including Wal-Mart and Amazon of trading on the group’s name without permission.
With founder and Run-D.M.C brand owner Darryl “DMC” McDaniels listed as the plaintiff, the group accuses the mega-retailers of “advertising, selling, manufacturing, promoting and distributing multiple products.” Items include glasses, hats, t-shirts, patches, and wallets, with each featuring the iconic Run-D.M.C logo and text.
Run-D.M.C not only accuse the defendants of having improperly profited from their brand, but of diluting and harming it, which let’s be honest, makes total sense given that stockists such as Wal-Mart and H&M are basically a death knell for any kind of self-respecting tour merch. Furthermore, the group has a $1.6 million logo deal in place with adidas, whose Superstar sneakers they helped popularize in the 80’s.
The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan and claims that: ‘Plaintiff will suffer immediate and irreparable injury, loss, or damage’ unless the infringements are stopped.”
Run-D.M.C was founded in New York in 1981 by McDaniels, Joseph “Run” Simmons, Darryl “DMC” and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, and went on to achieve worldwide success with hits like “Run’s House”, “Walk This Way” and “It’s Tricky”. The group disbanded in 2002 after Jam Master Jay was fatally shot in his recording studio.
