New York-based menswear renegade Willy Chavarria has announced a new collaboration with LA-based hi-tech sportswear label Brandblack. Having carved out an impressive aesthetic niche in recent seasons, Chavarria’s “tough elegance” has become something of a visual signature.

Similarly, Brandblack’s manifesto has always been to find a natural harmony between technology, humanity, style and substance, so it’s a harmonious union, to say the least.

The collaborative capsule is titled “Safe Words”, and Brandblack and Chavarria appropriately decided to shoot LA-based punk/metal/hip hop band Ho99o9 in a short video, directed by Blackrose.

Chavarria’s previous collections have made blunt political statements, standing up to bigotry and oppression by mining the aesthetics of marginalized movements. The latest is no different, and it’s a sartorial response to the terrifying racism, xenophobia and gender inequality that has spiked across society in recent months.

The collection features standout pieces such as wide-leg pleated trousers and cropped fleece-lined jackets in slick, water-resistant nylons. It’s a carefully calculated synthesis of Chavarria’s haute-street-style and Brandblack’s performance gear.

Tapping Ho99o9 to star in the video was a solid choice too, considering that everyone involved privileges open minds and invite progressive philosophies that translate into all of their respective endeavors.

Willy Chavarria x Brandblack firmly believes in the idea that everyone should be able to exist in a safe place with “safe words,” and you can see why for yourself in the video above.
