What We’re Saying: Three-way collaborations usually don’t work so well, but BAPE, Mastermind, and Dr. Martens have pulled off the improbable.

Dr. Martens has teamed up with both BAPE and Mastermind in the past. This season, however, the British footwear brand has tapped both for an unlikely three-way collaboration.

The subject of the collaboration is the 1461 shoe, which has been treated with screen-printed, asymmetric branding. Mastermind’s instantly-recognizable skull-and-bones logo is printed on the outside of the right shoe and the inside of the left, while BAPE‘s Shark motif logo is printed on the outside of the left and inside of the right shoe, creating a mismatched design.

When seen from the profile of either side, the shoe looks as if it is just a BAPE or Mastermind collaboration, When both medial or lateral sides become visible, it’s obvious that this is not your normal brand x brand collab.

The BAPE x Mastermind x Dr. Martens 1461 Shoe will be released on June 26. Check out the look book above — featuring BAPE Soho staff rocking the collecion —in the meantime.
