Editor’s Notes: Converse is making a big push to regain its lost market share in performance basketball sneakers with the teched-out All Star Pro BB, the first real update of the OG All Star. Converse had been a big hitter on basketball courts from the 1930s to the ’90s but hasn’t been seen on NBA courts since 2012, with the brand repositioned as a retro heritage label under Nike ownership.
Taking clear inspiration from the All Star Chuck Taylor, the Pro BB features modern-day materials and tech borrowed from Nike and a construction focused on on-court performance. Breaking the stranglehold Nike, Jordan Brand, adidas, and others have on the basketball market will be difficult. Converse’s return to performance basketball follows a similar attempt by PUMA to disrupt the powers that be in the NBA.
