Currently incarcerated rapper Kevin Gates has dropped a new song titled “What If.” The track plays on Joan Osborne’s 1995 song “What If God Was One Of Us” in the hook, asking “What if God is one of us/Just a thug like one of us.” The results? A somber and contemplative trap anthem from Gates, who, like Kodak Black, is finding ample time to be reflective behind bars. Listen to the track below.

The song is some of the first new music we’ve heard from the Baton Rouge rapper since last year’s Murder for Hire 2 EP. Gates was due to come out of prison last month after being sentenced to a 180-day stint for battery, after kicking a female fan off stage. However, according to XXL, he remains behind bars after being held on outstanding warrants from another state.
