Three things are synonymous with good weather, two are standard on any summer’s day: The beach, flip flops, and hot sand. No one knows this better than Havaianas.
After teasing their collaboration with a quirky animation last week, the Brazilian brand and LA cult label MARKET have released official images of their heat-reactive flip flops. Sure to keep you on your toes when you step out this season, the TRADI ZORI and Havaianas' classic TOP flip flops now feature thermal technology that makes them turn from black to red when exposed to heat.
Like many of the best innovations of our time, the project came about as a product of necessity. Speaking of his trip to meet with Havaianas in Brazil, MARKET founder Mike Cherman says: “As we were on the trip, one thing that was abundantly clear was that I needed flip flops if I was going to walk on sand. Being there in the middle of summer really made it apparent to me that we needed something to communicate back to the wearer – that warning of heat.”
Thermal technology aside, Havaianas and MARKET have managed to design what is genuinely a hot product (no pun intended). While the TOP retains the classic flip flop silhouette, the Tradi Zori is an alternative take that draws inspiration from traditional Japanese thong sandals. Both feature a slick all-black design with co-branded logos on the footbed.
Havaianas, which has been bringing Brazilian spirit all around the world through its acclaimed rubber sole and bright joyful designs since 1962, has always been youth-centric, an attribute that places the brand in the perfect position for playful collaborations such as this.
MARKET, meanwhile, has been moving at the speed of the internet for the past five years and is known for generating products that jump from concept to sell-out in just a few hours, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see these flops flying off the shelves faster than your mom could throw them at you.
While we might not be in line for another season of ‘The Floor Is Lava’ on TikTok, the collaboration will surely garner hype amongst those in the game for neoteric gems. As far as flip flops go, the pair are certainly different from anything we’ve seen before and we’re excited to see more brands take on collaborations that go over and beyond with their execution.
