Variety has revealed that a stand-alone Black Widow movie is in the works. According to the article, the studio has tapped up-and-coming writer Jac Schaeffer to pen the script while Scarlett Johansson will reprise her titular role.

In recent years, Marvel has received consistent criticism from fans for not introducing a Black Widow spinoff. Although Johansson's character has been part of The Avengers franchise since Iron Man 2 in 2010, she has often been relegated to secondary roles in lieu of her male superhero counterparts.

While the article claims the project is still in early development and is yet to be greenlit, the announcement of a scriptwriter will be read as a positive sign by fans. Variety continues that Marvel executives met with Johansson to discuss what qualities she would like to see in a writer for the film.

Who else would you like to see involved in the movie? Let us know in the comments.
