new on netflix august Insatiable
'Insatiable' / Netflix

Netflix has defended its latest show Insatiable, after over 200,000 people have signed a petition urging the streaming platform to cancel the series before it airs August 12.

The petition, which was launched after the show’s trailer released last week, accuses Insatiable of body-shaming. The series follows the story of high school student Patty who is bullied for her size before she rapidly loses weight and becomes accepted by her peers. Patty then uses this new-found popularity to take revenge on those who bullied her.

According to Deadline, Netflix’s Original Series VP Cindy Holland supported the show in a statement at the streamer’s Television Critics Association presentation. “The creator [Lauren Gussis] felt very strongly about exploring these issues based on her own experiences, but satirically, in a very over the top way.”

Holland explained that “fat shaming is in the DNA of the show” but that “the message of the show is that what is most important is you feel most comfortable.”

Lauren Gussi responded to the backlash on Twitter, writing, “This show is a cautionary tale about how damaging it can be to believe the outsides are more important — to judge without going deeper. Please give the show a chance.”
