Cop It, Then Rock It
Polo

Ralph Lauren has been releasing a bunch of heat lately. After re-issuing its iconic Snow Beach line, the sportswear brand is bringing back the legendary Polo CP-93 capsule collection, in order to celebrate brand’s 25th anniversary. The capsule collection took inspiration from Ralph Lauren’s sponsorship of the 1992 America’s Cup and is heavily Nautica-inspired. The re-issue of the CP-93 collection includes hats, swim trunks, sweaters and, of course, polo shirts. When this collection drops today at 5:00 pm EST (midnight CET), every respectable member of the Lo-Life Crew will be on their computer, trying to cop a piece.

The Lo-Life crew originated in 1988 when a bunch of kids from Brooklyn, infatuated with Ralph Lauren’s brand, became obsessed with accumulating and rocking as many Polo pieces as possible, and by any means necessary. That meant boostin’ (shoplifting), or beating up other kids to steal their Polo ‘fits. Owning as many Polo ‘fits was their occupation, and Ralph Lauren’s brand was their religion. Members of the crew would even gather around Times Square in New York City for Lo Goose on the Deuce, an annual competition (which is still taking place today) where they would show off their best Polo ‘fits and battle for the title of Best Goose.

Over the years, the crew has been recognized by many for putting Polo on the map, as far as the world of hip-hop goes. Rocking Polo suddenly became cool, and countless rappers began rocking Ralph Lauren’s garments, which is something that Ralph Lauren could never imagine in his wildest dreams. In fact, when Ralph Lauren launched his brand, Polo was followed by a completely different type of crowd – preppy, privileged white kids from the East Coast.
