Opening Ceremony

Brand: Opening Ceremony

Season: SS19

Key Pieces: Bold colored parkas, pullovers and sweats made in conjunction with Columbia, and deconstructed Lacoste polo shirts like the polo dress are some of the notable standouts.

Editor’s Notes: Opening Ceremony showcased its SS19 collection during New York Fashion Week in an event dubbed "The Gift of Showz," as it was an homage to drag queen culture hosted by Sasha Velour, season nine winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

The accompanying lookbook, featured above, is captured by Stef Mitchell and features an LGBTQIA+ cast, consisting of prominent drag performers including Lypsinka, Shea Couleé, Hungry, Jiggly Caliente, West Dakota, Farrah Moan and Miss Fame, in addition to a special guest appearance by Christina Aguilera. Additionally, each drag performer was tasked with reinterpreting a fabric from the collection and recreating a look that they then performed in.

The overall aesthetic of OC's SS19 collection captured the escapism of travel, while also bending the rules of gender norms, as women were styled in men's clothing and vice-versa.

With the range emphasizing tailored and billowing silhouettes like jackets, shirts, bottoms and more, the collection is punctuated with a number of collaborations with distinguished brands. Buffalo London and Opening Ceremony teamed up to produce exclusive footwear such as platform sneakers, while their partnership with Canadian footwear designer John Fluevog also resulted into three new colorways of the Munster, the iconic ‘80s club-kid platform shoe.

Additionally, Opening Ceremony and Columbia reworked a variety of outerwear and apparel inspired by Columbia’s ‘80s and ‘90s heritage, as some of the collaborative pieces like fleece pants, caps, and sweats are detailed with animal prints. Furthermore, the collabs is rounded out with Lacoste on reinterpreting the classic polo, and new iterations of button-up shirts with Gitman Bros.
