Rumors recently made the round claiming Sony was preparing to release its PlayStation 5 at some point this year. Said rumors have now been debunked by Kotaku, whose sources indicate a release is slated for closer to 2020.

PlayStation 4 launched nearly five years ago, which in turn launched seven years after the PS3. This trend has fans of the console excited for the next generation of PlayStation arriving soon, something Kotaku describes as “not unreasonable.”

However, sources quoted by the article indicate that the next PlayStation is unlikely to release in 2019, let alone 2018, but added that “on a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward.”
