If you don’t recognize Dijon McFarlane’s bounce-inducing, club-friendly production style by melody alone, the familiar tag, “Mustard on the beat, hoe,” is a slyly humorous proclamation that the man who shares the name of a French city famous for its mustard has blessed the track.
The Los Angeles-born creator’s pared down yet pleasingly melodic signature has not only made him a highly sought-after ear in the industry, it’s helped to cement the notoriety of frequent collaborator, YG, whose rhythmic, gangsta rap inflected output is reminiscent of the Golden Age of West Coast G-funk.
Though McFarlane or Mustard, as he’s better known, is one of the most in-demand songwriter/producer hybrids in the game, what many don’t know is that his love of clothing is on par with his love of music. Recently, Mustard joined Rihanna as the primary DJ for the European leg of her ANTI tour, alongside Big Sean, who makes a few appearances throughout the series.
While traveling, Mustard kept a photo diary of the outfits and jewelry he wore for each show. Scroll through the gallery above to see selections from Palace, Fear of God, Balmain, adidas, BAPE, and more. Oh, and word of advice: Don’t get your heart set on a backstage glimpse of Rih Rih because she is fully in ghost mode…just enjoy the fashion.
