You know it’s going to be a good week for new music when Björk suddenly decides to surprise drop a new single. But that’s just the tip of the ice-landic-berg. We were also hit with a propulsive floor-filling remix courtesy of Jamie xx (of his own song with The xx no less), an utterly fire collaboration between Post Malone and 21 Savage, yet another piece of cerebral electronica from Four Tet, and an unlikely duet courtesy of Gucci Mane and The Weeknd.
All of those and more make our picks for the Best Tracks of the Week.
Björk – “the gate”
Initially slated for release next week, Björk surprise dropped her new single “the gate” because she was “too excited to wait for Monday.” And thank God for that. As the first taste of what she has described as her “Tinder record,” the Icelandic chanteuse has delivered a seven-minute, spellbinding piece of breathy electronica. We are swiping right.
Fatima Al Qadiri – “Alkahaf” ft. Bobo Secret & Lama3an
After the extended alarm bell that was 2016’s Brute, Fatima Al Qadiri has returned with a slash of full-force fierceness. If rousing thumper “Alkhalf” is any indication, the producer’s upcoming EP Shaneera is set to be a multidimensional experimental club knockout that will keep dance floors hot even as it cools down.
Four Tet – “Scientists”
After releasing stellar single after stellar single all summer, Four Tet has finally announced his new album New Energy, out September 29. And what better way to herald its coming than with another stellar single? “Scientists” is another piece of cerebral dancefloor wonderment, all but ensuring that the artist’s next LP will be perfection.
Gucci Mane – “Curve” ft. The Weeknd
Although Gucci didn’t deliver the goods this week as expected, we’ll survive. While we wait for the rest of Mr. Davis, Guwop and The Weeknd have us covered with an icy new trap anthem. If the entirety of Gucci’s discography isn’t enough to hold you over until then, might we suggest digging into the Atlanta rapper’s first literary flex, The Autobiography of Gucci Mane coming out this Tuesday?
Jamie xx – “On Hold” (Remix)
Summer is basically over in this hemisphere, but we refuse to officially call it quits until we have one last open air dance to this bouncy bop of a remix courtesy of Jamie xx. The xx’s beatmaker extraordinaire takes the band’s forlorn break up song from I See You and transforms it into a sublime and serene stomper.
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – “To Feel Your Best”
Amazingly, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has been releasing new work nonstop since her breathtaking full-length EARS from last year. Even more amazing is that the quality of this work keeps getting better. Her latest single is no exception; “To Feel Your Best” is another piece of her earthy, organic electronica, a sound that no one else is even close to making.
King Krule – “Dum Surfer”
Let’s not even get into nailing down what kind of genre a song like “Dum Surfer” is, because that would warrant its own article. Let’s instead focus on how it makes you feel, which by song’s end should encompass the full spectrum of human emotion. King Krule’s second single from his upcoming album The OOZ is funny, scary, groovy, chaotic, sweet and unsettling all at once. It might just be his mini-masterpiece.
Lorde – “Homemade Dynamite” Remix ft. Khalid, Post Malone & SZA
Lorde proves you can indeed improve on perfection with her “Homemade Dynamite” remix, enlisting a formidable trio of Post Malone, Khalid, and SZA. In this chapter of Lorde’s house party, Khalid is on an intoxicated joyride with a new fling, SZA finally gets some alone time with her already-taken crush, and Post Malone makes moves to make sure his lady sticks around.
Marilyn Manson – “WE KNOW WHERE YOU FUCKING LIVE”
We don’t know about you, but we personally need to thrash around our rooms to loud, possibly angry music every seven days or so. This week, our boy Marilyn “Bieber is full of shit” Manson has got us covered with the all-caps, no holds barred “WE KNOW WHERE YOU FUCKING LIVE.” In case you can’t get enough goth rock goodness, Manson is set to drop his new album Heaven Upside Down on October 6.
Post Malone – “rockstar” ft. 21 Savage
Post Malone linking up with 21 Savage is already the stuff of dreams for most hip-hop fans; the fact that their first collaboration is fantastic is just icing on the cake. Over a beat that clicks and whirs beneath them, Post turns in a delectably syrupy hook, while Savage’s verse is witty excellence: “They like ‘Savage, why you got a 12-car garage and you only got six cars?'” Duh, he’s a rockstar.
