Having been caught fraternizing with the cast of Stranger Things and notably commissioning a reboot of the British Channel 4 series Top Boy, OVO member Drake hasn't shied away from his love of television. Following the release of the two-track EP Scary Hours, Drake fans are speculating whether or not the rapper is also a secret anime fanboy as per lyrics on the song "Diplomatic Immunity."
According to Reddit user SwamiNB, Drake's lyrics are a double reference to the recurrent Drake vs. Joe Budden beef as well as the animated series Lovely Complex. The lyric in question is, "Shit is complex like short n*ggas 'round tall ladies."
While many would attribute that line to the host and former host of Complex's Everyday Struggle series, DJ Akademiks and Budden, the line has also been linked to the anime rom-com series that focuses on the relationship between Ootani, a shorter-than-average-guy and Koizumi, a "tall lady."
While an interesting observation, this isn't Drake's first anime rodeo. In 2015, rumors surfaced that Drake was the voice behind the theme song for Spider-Riders, a Canadian-Japanese animation. It was then revealed to be Jason Dantes, member of the Otarian rap group BrassMunk.
In 2016, Drake also shared the cover art for the single "Wanna Know" featuring Dave, which bore heavy resemblance to the popular 1997 anime and manga Naruto.
