As the new vice president of men’s design at Vince, Patrik Ervell is reimaging the brand. Drawing on his California roots—and working out of Vince’s L.A. design studio–it’s no surprise that Vince’s Pre-Spring 2019 collection takes its inspiration from the golden state, and we’re really not mad about it.

In the deep freeze of winter, all we want to do is escape to the desert, and when we can’t our wardrobes are the answer. Ervell proposes elevated classic pieces and gives us a taste of the new direction Vince menswear is taking. Peep the warm color palette, the transitional pieces that are great for layering, and the Baja references.

We got a first look at Vince’s Pre-Spring ’19 lookbook and have rounded up our favorite five pieces.

Cashmere Baja Stripe Hoodie

If you’ve spent any time in Southern California, you’ve come across the Baja poncho, a staple at trendy flea markets that are popular with surfers. It’s a print that evokes evenings on the beach, which is to say a very good thing when you’re, say, living on the East Coast dealing with wet weather in the spring. We also like the relaxed fit of this hoodie.

Coaches Jacket

Spring weather is unpredictable. Some days are much colder than others, which doesn’t make dressing easy. We’re feeling this jacket because it’s a good transition piece; you can layer it over a tee or over a turtleneck. And the blue is a nice alternative to anyone who typically favors black.

Utility Chino

The earthy color of these chinos is the answer to your spring wardrobe needs. It looks super fresh with a white tee and captures the desert landscapes associated with Southern California. Plus, with all the western wear vibes in fashion these days, the color is on the mark.

Sherpa Coaches Jacket

If you haven’t tried on a sherpa jacket yet, you’re straight-up missing out. It’s so comfortable you’ll want to wear it year-round. We like this version because of its lightness in color and weight. It’s the kind of outerwear piece that’ll look dope with white jeans on a cool spring night.

Shibori Tie Dye Crew

The graphic print of this long-sleeve crew is definitely eye catching. It’s one of those pieces that very quickly makes your wardrobe feel fresh. We’d rock it over our favorite pair of track pants.
