Highsnobiety

Scientifically speaking, blood is thicker than water, but the indescribable bond between chosen families is one that is unbreakable. At least in the case of the emerging creative collective TMM formally known as “To Many More,” this notion rings especially true. Unified through a common goal of creating a safe haven for creatives of color, the inception of To Many More is a tale as old as time, a testament of the unifying power of community.

That very core ethos is also the driving force behind family favorite instant camera brand INSTAX. Further solidifying their place as the leading medium to document and memorialize life’s most intimate moments, the INSTAX brand ushers in the holiday season by spotlighting Brooklyn-based powerhouse To Many More and how they celebrate as a family. Forever immortalized through the power of the INSTAX MINI 40–the classic instant camera with a textured body boasting silver accents–each candid flick encapsulates the brimming bliss that filled the room like a fragrant aroma.

Read the exclusive conversation below where TMM details their tried-and-true holiday rituals, how their collective came to be, and their mission to harness the power of community to create a lasting legacy.

This word holds a lot of different meanings for many, but what does the “family” signify to you?

The word “family” signifies a tight-knit community bound by shared values, support, and a deep sense of connection. It’s not solely defined by blood but extends to those who share in our journey, offering unwavering support and understanding.

As we approach the holiday season, can you share the importance of “chosen family,” specifically around this time of year?

The importance of “chosen family” during the holiday season is a source of warmth and belonging. It’s a conscious decision to surround ourselves with individuals who uplift and understand us. In a season often focused on biological ties, our chosen family provides a space for authentic celebration and shared traditions.

What are some holiday rituals and traditions for your collective? Can you briefly share what makes this particular tradition or ritual a mainstay in your holiday season?

We gathered intimately with our dearest girlfriends for a brunch celebration, symbolized by breaking bread together. As a gesture of gratitude, we gifted flowers to those who have played significant roles in the journey of To Many More (TMM) throughout the year.

Would you say creative/artistic expression unites your collective/chosen family? If so, share a few examples of how.

Absolutely! From collaborative projects to shared creative spaces, artistic expression is the glue that binds us. Our stoop sales and community initiatives showcase the diverse talents of our chosen family, fostering unity through the celebration of individuality.

Taking the Highsnobiety readers back to the collective's inception, can you detail your earliest memories of how your collective came to be? Was there a singular moment of uniting to accomplish a common goal or was it something that happened organically over time?

To Many More came to be organically, emerging from a shared desire to create meaningful experiences. While there wasn’t a singular moment, our first stoop sale together was a pivotal event. The synergy during the planning and the joy it brought to the community solidified our collective purpose of celebrating connection, creativity, and culture through thoughtfully curated experiences.

As a collective what are some things you aim to address through your creative/artistic work? How does this work represent your community and push your community forward?

Our work aims to address cultural shifts, amplify underrepresented voices, and cultivate a safe space for everyone to gather.

I feel that quite often we lean on our chosen family to fill in for our biological family during times of need. Does that resonate with this collective? If so, in what ways have you shown up for each other?

In many ways, yes. Our chosen family has been a pillar of support during challenges, celebrating successes, and offering unconditional love. Their presence in our lives mirrors the depth and strength traditionally associated with biological families.

What makes photographs so important? What role do they play in highlighting the essence of familial ties and the memories that fuel unity?

Photographs freeze moments in time, preserving the essence of experiences we share with others. They evoke emotions, tell stories, and serve as visual reminders of the bond within our family. Each image represents a chapter in our collective journey.

How did the INSTAX MINI 40 camera help make your family brunch/Friendsgiving all the more special? What was your favorite moment from the gathering?

The INSTAX MINI 40 added a tangible, spontaneous element to our gathering. Capturing candid shots of our friends laughing, hugging, and toasting sparked so much joy.

With that in mind, what about this particular gathering reflects the core beliefs of the collective?

This particular gathering resonated deeply with the core beliefs of our collective/chosen family because it exemplified our commitment to genuine connections, creative expressions, and celebrating the diversity within our circle. From the delectable spread of bagels and the rhythmic beats of good music to the creative flower bouquet-making sessions, our brunch was a delightful blend of flavors, tunes, and artistry.

What do you hope the legacy of your collective will be?

We hope our legacy is one of inspiration and empowerment. We aim to leave behind a tapestry of creativity, resilience, and community impact. Through our work and connections, we aspire to be a catalyst for positive change, leaving a lasting imprint on the hearts and minds of those who join us in this journey.
