The overall impression from last night's MTV Video Music Awards seems to be that nobody was feeling it. Despite a pre-show Backstreet Boys performance, J-Lo and Travis Scott delivering medleys, and Cardi B pretending to breastfeed on stage, the general consensus was one big "meh."

The biggest contention of the night, however, was Madonna's tribute to Aretha Franklin — or rather, Madonna's tribute to Madonna. The speech, as reported by CNN and Time, opened with Madonna stating that Franklin — who died last week following a battle with pancreatic cancer — had "changed the course of my life."

She went on to share her experiences of singing Franklin's songs at auditions, stating how surprised people were that "some skinny-ass white girl" would choose to "belt out a song by one of the greatest soul singers that ever lived." Unsurprisingly, Twitter called Madge out immediately for focusing on herself rather than actually paying tribute to Aretha Franklin.

We've assembled the best Twitter reactions (to Madonna's speech and the rest of the VMAs) below for your perusal. Check it out.
