Directed by Yann Demange, the film is set in 1980s Detroit, and is based on a true story of a blue-collar father (Matthew McConaughey) and his teenage son (Richie Merritt), who became an undercover police informant and later a drug dealer, but whose life quickly spiraled downward after he was abandoned by his handlers.

Written by Andy Weiss and Logan & Noah Miller, the film also stars Bel Powley, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brian Tyree Henry, Rory Cochrane and more. White Boy Rick is slated to hit select theaters for a limited release on September 14, before a wider debut on September 21.
