Where the runway meets the street

We’ve previously shouted out young Filipino-Italian designer Gianfranco Villegas and his label SELF MADE on our Under the Radar series. The burgeoning brand’s FW17 collection, just shown in Paris, affirms exactly why Villegas is one to keep an eye on.

Where his previous collection paid homage to the R&B style icons of his youth, riffing off the overzealous visuals from the likes of Cam’ron to Fabulous in their heyday, with fruity pink bombers and fuzzy bucket hats, his latest collection looks inwards.

For FW17, the designer takes inspiration from a turbulent childhood growing up in Florence, Italy, as the son of an immigrant Filipino mother who didn’t enjoy a privileged upbringing. His carefully-cultivated skill set in refined Italian tailoring and embroidery totally disregards the class-coded expectations that burdened his youth and that finesse is proudly showcased across every single piece.

Aptly titled “Lost Memories,” Villegas hand stitches, hand stamps, and hand sewn motifs from his very own childhood poems on everything from cropped denim jeans to velour bombers to silk overcoats and hand-loomed xenia wool jackets. It’s a seriously confident collection of statement styles in wholly wearable shapes.
