Astrid Andersen sat down with Highsnobiety during Copenhagen Fashion Week to deconstruct her SS17 menswear collection. Below, we take an exclusive look at Andersen's studio and her top five favorite looks from the collection.
Known for her uncompromising approach to the modern masculine wardrobe, Astrid Andersen is a Danish-bred, London-based designer specializing in premium casualwear infused with a sportswear aesthetic, aimed at the contemporary generation of menswear. For SS17, Astrid endeavored to conceptualize a versatile collection with elements that would fit any weather or lifestyle. “We wanted do something you couldn’t place on a particular season, so we did heavier jackets, light jackets, shorts, etc. We wanted to create something seasonal neutral,” says Andersen.
The same goes for the choice of color palette, it’s soothing on the eyes, while neons from past seasons have been replaced by calm browns and ice blues. “I think it stands out for a lot of people, normally when we do the summer color palette it's really bright and vibrant, but this time we’re really considering store deliveries and buying schedules,” says Andersen.
Below, Astrid selects five pieces from her latest men's collection that truly stand out and define her overall aesthetic for SS17.
"The lace T-shirt is a signature for us, it's my favorite fabric to mix with our style code. I love the simplicity of a basic shape, paired with an extraordinarily beautiful lace. We didn’t want to do cotton shirts, we wanted the finishes and the trims to fit our identity. We’ve been trying to implement ideas that felt more feminine.”
Technical Trench Jacket
"I love the technical trench jacket because it's a formal coat featuring a a technical finish."
"This tracksuit is my way of demonstrating how our brand can use a very traditional fabric but still create an authentic look true to our DNA. The idea behind the collection came to me when I visited Toronto for the 2016 NBA All-Star game, and later went to check out Niagara Falls, it was an experience from nature."
"The weave we used for this bomber is a strong story for us because it elevates the branding aspect and creates a very premium look within a casual aesthetic."
Watch for Astrid Andersen's online store to launch later this year, and in the meantime take a look back at her A$AP Ferg collaboration.
