Nanamica

Brand: nanamica

Season: Fall/Winter 2021

Key Pieces: nanamica never underdelivers its seasonal outerwear and, as usual, there are loads of covetable field parkas, weatherproof blazers, and minimalist mac coats to go round, best paired with some giant cargo pants, easy knit cardigans, or '90s-inflected sweatsuits.

Buy: nanamica, Tanner Goods, Norse Store, Hip Store, SSENSE

Editor's Notes There's an exciting energy around the contemporary nanamica collections, a sign of revitalization at the nearly twenty-year-old brand. Stylist Akio Hasegawa — the man behind AH.H and Nautica Japan — takes a beautifully baggy approach to the lookbooks, which always highlight plenty of subtly killer clothes. nanamica's Fall/Winter 2021 collection, "Heart-warming Life-Tech wear," sounds like a humble affair but it's really more of a progressive experiment in functional menswear, thoughtfully designed to serve needs that the wearer didn't know existed.

It'd be a shame to undersell how exciting it is to see nanamica getting back into the swing of things. The brand was founded in 2003 and never lost its way in terms of useful utility but it was often stylistically outshined by The North Face Purple Label's exceptional lookbooks — remember, TNFPL is overseen by nanamica founder Eiichiro Homma. Nowadays, there's a new nanamica on the block, and it's a force to be reckoned with.

A classic nanamica color palette — black and charcoal meets brown and navy — informs oodles of approachable outerwear, ranging from technical coats to tailored jackets but never without functional fabrics (yep, GORE-TEX) that insulate and fight off inclement weather. Cozy fleece, sweats, and high-necked inner layers boost warmth retention while baggy chinos and cargo pants make for casual military cues, a nanamica throughline since the early days.
