If the whispers on MacRumors are to be believed, Apple is gearing up to drop its third-generation of AirPods this fall.

Although the second-gen AirPods only arrived in March this year, apparently Apple is already working on improving them. The most recent iteration came complete with "Hey Siri" functionality and a charging case, while the rumored third version is said to incorporate noise cancellation.

While noise cancellation would be an obviously welcome addition, MacRumors' report points out that the tech is difficult to harness and would put a bigger toll on battery life. At the time the second-generation AirPods came out, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested that new AirPods with noise cancelation and water resistance were in the pipeline, but would likely be set back until 2020 in light of the second-gen's delayed release.

Quite what these updates would do to the current wireless-charging AirPods' already steep $199 price remains to be seen.
