Martine Rose is anything but ordinary. This fact was highlighted once again by the designer’s new FW21 snakeskin, open-toe mule/loafer, which has hit retailers this week after being previewed during Rose’s “What We Do All Day” digital experience in January.

The footwear style is part mule, part loafer, part open-toe sandal, and 100 percent a statement. While loafers have long been a steadfast part of Martine Rose collections, this toe-less iteration is fresh and unlike anything we’ve seen from the designer thus far.

It almost looks (and likely feels, if you manage to slip your feet into a pair) like the final evolution of the oft-documented mulement, first popularised by the @muleboyz IG account. Previously scoffed at or the butt of sneakerheads’ jokes, mules have firmly established themselves as a trustworthy option for people looking to balance comfort, breathability, ease-of-access, and style.

You’re not going to be as comfortable as when you’re wearing sneakers, neither is your foot going to be locked into the shoe completely. But the beauty of the mule is that you can have a little bit of everything — especially when your mule is Martine Rose’s open-toe loafer.

The Martine Rose snake open-toe loafer features a leather upper treated with snakeskin-like pattern embossing, an open square moc toe, and a leather outsole. It is now available at select retailers such as SSENSE as part of Martine Rose FW21. The retail price is set at $580.
