Editor's Notes: New Balance's newest model is about to get its first standalone release, and it's already set for a big year.

First presented as part of Joe Freshgoods' instant sell-out collection, the 9060 has since been spotted on the runway for Mowalola's triumphant return to the fashion calendar in Paris, and now its first in-line release has been unveiled by Aminé.

The recently-appointed New Balance ambassador took some time to pose in the sneaker's latest colorway, which combines grey mesh with light brown hints of pig suede on the upper.

As with so many of the American label's newest models, the 9060 combines elements from its vast archive and gives it a contemporary refresh. This time, that archival inspiration comes from its early-2000s running shoes — once again, we are being pulled in by Y2K's tight grip.

Specifically, this shoe takes its design cues from the 99X series. A collection of technically-led athletic shoes, it was first launched in 1982 with the 990, before expanding to include other notable silhouettes such as the 991 and 993.

Taking the 99X series, combining it with early 2000s runners such as the 860, and then exaggerating the proportions a bit, New Balance arrives at a bulky sneaker with a wavy sole unit and sporty multi-material upper.

The past few years have seen many New Balance models rise to the top of the meta in the hyped-driven sneaker landscape. Most recently, that has included the 550, which continues to sell out at record speeds whenever a new colorway drops, and the 2002r, which has been provided new relevance thanks to the protection pack.

New Balance will be hoping that the 9060 gets the same reception and, if the Joe Freshgoods pair that previously dropped is anything to go by, they're set to receive it.
