Nike has long been at the cutting edge of sneaker design but in 2023, all of the big names rival each other with the latest technological breakthroughs. Nowadays, the biggest preoccupation of sneaker brands is how to make their offerings more sustainable, and rightly so. While many of the other giants simply remanufacture their icons with sustainable alternatives to leather, Nike offers up the Terrascape range.

Terrascape is the name given to a selection of Nike sneakers that use at least 20 percent (by weight) recycled materials in their makeup. But along with the material updates, the silhouettes are given amazing visual makeovers, too. One that really caught our eye recently is the Nike Air Max Terrascape 97.

The Nike Air Max Terrascape 97 is, obviously, based around the AM97 silhouette which lifts inspiration from Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains. But, now a long way from its OG Silver Bullet colorway, the Air Max Terrascape 97 looks perfect for spring in a deconstructed black outfit.

Starting from the sole unit, the Terrsacape 97 features a Nike Grind feature. The speckled finish is the result of waste plastic melded together to form the Air Max 97 midsole. Above the sole is a newly reinforced mudguard which sets the foundations for the dark color palette. Stitched on top of the mudguard is a one-piece fabric upper carrying the iconic structural lines that define the 97.

This lightweight, conscious take on the staple silhouette is a triumph in that it shows that recycled updates needn’t be boring replicants of already-loved sneakers. The new look for the Air Max Terrascape 97 is one of the best colorways we’ve seen for the shoe in a long time; it’s a guaranteed cop for the 2023 rotation.
